Mallory Dayton, a junior at Steinbrenner High School, wowed the audience on September 30th in the Steinbrenner school auditorium with her one-act, “The Audition.” Her play showed the real feeling and experience of being a theatre student today.
The annual One-Acts show is a chance for students to apply and perform their own show in front of their school and peers. They get the opportunity to direct, act, and design a show entirely on their own. The showcase helps highlight the talent and creativity within the program.
Mallory Dayton was a sophomore when she began planning her show. Spending hours researching ideas and inspiration, she finally landed on a story that allows the audience to experience what it is like to be on the stage and behind the scenes.
She quickly began auditioning for her characters after finding her one-act. She described the process saying that “I would come across their application and once I read, I knew they were the one.” While most of the other shows displayed that night had around 8 actors and actresses, Mallory had nearly 16 to display. She submitted her application to direct, and once accepted, she spent her summer finding props and other items for “The Audition.”
Mallory described her favorite part of the show being working with her amazing cast. “They’re a really fun group of people; they’re able to make the experience exciting and enjoyable while still being serious about what we want to show on the stage,” she said. “It was really interesting watching my vision come to life.”
“The Audition” helps display that everyone belongs somewhere and can do their own thing as well as be their own person, and that’s exactly what Mallory Dayton wanted her audience to feel.
