The viral Dubai Chocolate has been the most trending food on social media. A viral video featuring this chocolate gained 120 million views which sent the audience in a craze, with everyone trying to get their hands on the fascinating bar, as popularity increased, it only added to the frenzy, leading to a worldwide pistachio shortage.
It was first created by Sarah Hamouda with the intent of making something new regarding her pregnancy cravings. She created bars with unusual ingredients, creating this globally known, world-loving, pistachio chocolate bar.
This chocolate is the definition of don’t knock it till you try it. Including unusual textures and flavors, this bar consists of crispy kadaifi, pistachio butter and tahini paste, all covered up with a layer of milk chocolate. A sophomore at Steinbrenner, Finley Grade, said, “My favorite part of the bar was the pistachio filling, I thought it was really good.”
Being branded as “Can’t get Knafeh of it”, people really couldn’t get enough of it! Chocolate stores internationally started selling this product, reaching places such as New York and Ireland. “I first tried Dubai chocolate in New York, and it became one of my favorite types of chocolate,” said freshman Ziva Tyagi.
Netizens hopped on the Dubai Chocolate trend and made it at home, bought it from stores and chocolatiers.
Although Dubai chocolate is a blessing to many tastebuds it has caused problems correlating with the popularity of this product. Due to the high supply and demand for the chocolate bar, pistachio prices have increased significantly leading to limited availability.
This causes strain for chocolate manufacturers such as Lindt and Hotel Chocolat because they rely on pistachios for their products. This also causes stress for pistachio producers, the U.S and Iran. Known as being the global supply chain for this nut, there have been issues regarding the poor harvests and high demands with expectations they are not able to meet.
With this pistachio problem becoming significantly larger, it is important to find ways to help minimize the needed supply for this nut. One method to reduce the demand is by not buying a significant amount of chocolate that incorporates pistachios, like Dubai chocolate. A sophomore, Mae Harrel, said, “As much as I love Dubai Chocolate, I would definitely stop buying it for a while if it’s causing a shortage.”
With time, the global imbalance that involves pistachios is expected to smoothen out, as producers will get a chance to steady out their stocks.
Finding alternatives for this nut is also important in making a difference in this shortage. Considering substitutes and finding chances to use other nuts instead is a large portion of a solution that could easily fix this problem.
Though it may be causing problems in the global economy, this viral chocolate is still a fan favorite, and netizens will continue to love it forever.
