Monday, October 13th marked the start of a new chapter in the year’s story: quarter two. While many are excited for the fun the future holds, it’s not right to forget how far we’ve come. From a successful Spirit Week to high exam scores, the Warriors have kicked the year off with a bang!
The first quarter is usually a bit shaky, since it’s time to get back to work after a summer of relaxation. As it goes on, students get steadier and steadier on their feet, and at the end, they’re ready for what’s next. For the most part, students are happy with their progress. “I’m still doing pretty well in pre-calc, which is mainly what I was really stressed about,” said junior Valeria Cervantes. A good feeling like this is what you want to try for when you’re starting the year.
Freshman Mar Roque is also happy with Steinbrenner. “It’s really sweet, really nice, clean, you know?” This is a great first impression, one that will make them and other newcomers feel more comfortable and confident at this new school.
The staff members are also satisfied with this past quarter. English teacher and event director Mrs. Haskell says that ‘the first pep rally was a good work-in-progress’. Though she wasn’t entirely pleased by it, she’s optimistic about future performances.
Now, what’s ahead?
For starters, there’s a bit of testing that comes up in quarter two. Many classes have midterms. “In the second quarter, I believe that we give some retakes for EOCs, for the FAST reading [and] we’ll give the ASVAB”, says librarian Dr. Dillion. For those who don’t know, the ASVAB is a test designed to show what relevant skills you have for the military and is required for enlistment. “It’s a good test for anyone to take as a strength-finder test,” she adds.
Of course, academic challenges can be a bit intimidating. But some, like freshman Arjay Acres, have a lot of confidence about these exams. “I know that if I just work hard, I’ll do fine,” he says.
Besides testing, there’s also plenty of sports games to attend. For example, the upcoming football game on October 31st. This one is special, as it is a school-wide pink out.
And most importantly, there are a lot of fun things to do with friends! The second quarter holds both Thanksgiving and Winter break, which many students look forward to. But for the time being, let’s try and power through this together!
