After a long morning of classes and work, students are likely to get hungry and need fuel to keep them going. The two lunch periods are important times of the day so students can regain their energy. At Steinbrenner, school lunch is provided to all students and varies in options. The quality and types of school lunch has always been an interesting topic of conversation amongst the students.
The students who choose to get school lunch have their own views on cafeteria food provided. Every day, the school changes their menu, so students don’t get bored with what they eat. These foods consist of chicken tenders, pasta, calzones, walking tacos, burgers, and salads. While cafeteria food is where most students go, handfuls of students choose to get food from the culinary class. Students are allowed to buy food from their menu, which also changes every day to include pasta, wraps, cookies, and cake all made by the culinary students. However, it is not permitted to eat culinary food in the lunchroom, and it is advised to do so in classrooms instead.
Most students who buy cafeteria food have mixed feelings about the meals. “[It’s] a hit or miss,” said junior Joshua Nyguen. Each day something different is prepared which can lead to good and bad days. The choice of the day’s lunch brings a lot of conversations to the tables.
While some students give it a new chance each day, others have made up their mind. “It’s kind of…terrible,” said sophomore Eiley Sawhill. The food served is described as unappealing and sickening to certain students. However, students who buy cafeteria food regularly have certain meals that positively stand out. “I would recommend the chicken sandwich because it’s good,” stated sophomore Sophia Crews.
While school lunch is a common option for food, some kids prefer culinary food due to its sophistication and overall seeming better. While culinary food may be considered slightly more expensive to some, it tends to be worth it due to the variety and dedication to the craft.
“I would rate it ten out of ten. It’s really good…I think it’s like somewhat inexpensive and it is good quality,” said freshman Georgia Buffery. Many students can see the distinctive difference between school lunch and culinary food when it comes to the presentation and execution.
The two food options are so different in fact that they don’t even prepare their food the same way. “They are two different things. They follow two different procedures,” said Steinbrenner’s culinary teacher, Chef Sal. With these options being almost completely separate from each other, it’s not a surprise at the difference in comments and opinions.
As a general overview of school lunches at Steinbrenner, it is safe to say students tend to prefer culinary rather than cafeteria food. While this may be a trend among most students, the bulk of them seem to still gravitate towards the cafeteria.
No matter what the students at Steinbrenner have to say about the food options, they continue to bring plenty of traffic to both. Much like everything else that pertains to the school, the students are grateful for not only the food, but the wonderful people who prepare it.
