In an intense District Championship game on Saturday, February 8th, the Lady Warriors basketball team hoped to secure a District title against a school rival and relentless opponent, the Sickles Gryphons. The Warriors spent most of the game digging out of a 2nd quarter slump. Despite an outstanding second half effort and comeback attempt, the Gryphons emerged victorious, winning 60-51, clinching the win in the final minutes.
It was a game filled with tense moments, back-and-forth scoring runs, and intense defensive plays, but ultimately, it was the visiting team who held on for the win. Steinbrenner was devastated losing a game of this magnitude on their home court. The Warriors season wasn’t quite done yet. They kept their season alive to make a run at the regional championship. The Quarterfinal game was against Mitchell on February 13th and Steinbrenner dominated, winning 68-32.
“It was devastating to lose districts, but I can’t let this stop my motivation to win regionals. What I am doing now to prepare for these big games is making sure l am taking care of my body while making sure I’m getting shots up every day I can.” Sophomore star Sammi Coble said. Steinbrenner then faced the number 2 ranked Gateway Eagles (Fort Meyers, FL) in the Semi-Final game. The Warriors knew going in that this game would be a tough battle, but they have been preparing all season for games like these. The preparation showed because the Warriors pulled out an outstanding win with the final score being 51-45.
The Sickles Gryphons upset the Charlotte Tarpons which set up a District rematch, in the Regional Finals. The Warriors would host this rematch and the rubber match of the rivalry. It was time for the Sickles Gryphons and Steinbrenner Warriors to have a rematch. Steinbrenner was hungry for a championship and to beat their rival. Freshman Aria Parker said, “I’ve been a little nervous in these post season games but I would be crazy to not be. But I’m also really excited to have this chance to go so far, and I really want to keep playing.”
The gym was electric with all athletic sports teams coming to support. Both teams came to play, and it showed with both teams knocking down shots and making great drives to the basket. In the last couple minutes Steinbrenner pulled it away and became regional champions. The final score was 71-61. This will make Steinbrenner girls basketball history being the first team ever to make it to the State championship. Head Coach Alex Hertenstein said, “The team’s confidence has grown so much since last season. Their belief in themselves and their teammates has really made the team stand out this year and has allowed us to have such a successful season.”
Next up for the Lady Warriors is the State Semifinals on March 6th.
