The Steinbrenner High School girls basketball team is on roll, boasting a perfect 8-0 record as they headed into a crucial district matchup against their rival Sickles High School this past Friday. The team’s success is fueled by strong teamwork, a relentless defense, and a high-powered offense.
“Our communication is so much better than last year, we’re talking a lot more on the court, and it’s really helping us get these wins” said Sophomore Sammi Coble. As a team captain, she has focused on improving her leadership skills and her individual shooting game.
The Warriors took on the Sickles Griffins last Friday on December 13th. This was their biggest district game. They had been preparing for this game since the beginning of the season and it definitely showed. The Lady Dubs dominated each quarter with even shots failing in the last seconds. The final score was 57-53 and right now Steinbrenner is still undefeated with a record of 9-0.
Senior Naomi Parker thinks that defense has been a major factor in the team’s dominance. “Our defense looks really good this year,” Parker explains. “We’re turning teams over and creating easy steals and transition points.” Parker also credits the team’s balanced scoring attack. “We have really good shooters, which have spaced the floor really well,” she says. “I think we have a good shot at winning regionals this year.” The team’s preparation is also key, as they approach every game with the same intensity.
Sophomore Breanna Hartley emphasizes the team’s collaborative spirit. “We’re playing as a team this year instead of as individuals,” she says. Hartley focuses on practicing game-like scenarios and honing her skills based on coaches’ feedback. Her ability to drive to the basket, draw defenders, and dish to open teammates has been a valuable asset for the team.
The team’s impressive stats back up their confidence. In recent victories, they’ve consistently put up big numbers, often with multiple players scoring in double digits. Sammi Coble has been a consistent scoring threat, frequently hitting multiple three-pointers in a game. Parker has been a force on both ends of the court, racking up points, rebounds, and assists. Other key contributors include Sarah Coble, Avery Adams, and Breanna Hartley, demonstrating the team’s depth and balanced attack.
With their strong teamwork, amazing defense, and a transitioning well offense, they are poised to continue their winning streak and make a serious run at a district title.
