Steinbrenner provides many ways to earn college credit while in high school, two of the options being Advanced Placement (AP) and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) courses. AP classes have been around for a long time, and they’re the top choice for students that want to gain college credit. Advanced placement classes are through College Board, and they are college level classes. At the end of the year, you take an AP exam where you can earn a score of one to five, only getting the college credit if you score at least a three.
AICE classes on the other hand are newer program offered at Steinbrenner. They are also college level classes through Cambridge, but at the end of the year you take an exam that is all free response.
Junior Lucia Marti-Garro is currently taking AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, and AICE Musicology, and has taken two AP history courses in the past.
“AICE classes are definitely harder testing wise, but AP classes have a bigger workload,” said Marti-Garro.
She says she would not take AICE classes again because they are, “less organized and less straightforward.” Which is good to know for people who like organization. Marti-Garro also recommends AP classes for those who have a good work ethic, and if you are a poor test taker to not take AICE classes.
AICE has always been made out to be easier than AP classes, since the exams are easier to pass, but it seems to show that AP has been around for a while for a reason.
