Summer is right around the corner which means break is coming up! With school off, students have many activities they plan to do. Going to the beach, out of state, or outside the country may be on some people’s radar; however, there are many students taking the time off from school to focus on boosting their resumes. Some people must work during the break to earn extra money, or to gain extra hours for school. The jobs provide students with the opportunity to gain work experience. Depending on the job, summer break may not be so bad for the next few months.
There are many types of jobs people can have in the summer. They can range from being incredibly fun to being very boring. For example, people work as camp counselors, at a coffee shop, babysitter, or even a lifeguard. “I work in a clubhouse pool in which I am a pool attendant. This is basically a lifeguard. I also work in the cafe, so I make food and drinks,” said sophomore Brynn Campbell. Overall, there are many types of jobs that can either be fun or boring to work during the break.
In addition to using Summer as a time to work a job, some students have found internship opportunities to partake in. Internships are a great way to gain experience in a certain career and to shadow individuals that are already in the workforce. Junior Cooper Green says the reason for selecting an internship over summer and having a job year-round will be beneficial for his career goals in medicine. “I chose to start at Tampa General because I want to go into the medical field in the future and they were starting to allow applications for 16-year-olds instead of 18-year-olds and I thought it would be a great opportunity to intern at such a big hospital.” said Green.
Looking into school-posted programs can help you navigate how to find an internship that’s right for you as well. Eli Caldwell, a junior with an interest in technology-based careers, recently went through an extensive interview process to work with a Fortune 500 communications company. This opportunity was presented to Caldwell during freshman year, and he was promised an interview the summer before his senior year if he completed his work in the Information Technology Academy. “I am most excited to finally get experience in the technology field. As for many years I have taken classes and done projects with technology, I am excited that I will be able to put my knowledge together with experience to have the best understanding of technology as a whole.” said Caldwell. As a word of advice, Caldwell says “For students trying to find a position this summer, I would recommend researching a topic they enjoy and trying to either ask around people they know who are in that field that may have connections or using websites such as indeed.com to try to find a position that way.”
