April Fools’ Day is known as the one day a year that people can pull pranks, jokes, and tricks on people without having a reason. Not only do these pranks happen between friends or families, but popular brands also like to pull tricks too. This year, brands like Evry Jewels and Oreo have joked around, fooling their fans! But where did this annual holiday come from?
April Fools’ Day dates all the way back to 1582. When France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, the new year began at a different time. Instead of the new year starting around April 1, as it is in the Julian calendar, the Gregorian calendar starts the new year on January 1. According to history.com, “People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called ‘April fools.’”
Every year on this special day, it has become a tradition to prank and trick people for fun. The pranks can get as broad as giving someone a cup of Jello when they think it is juice, to freezing a spoon in water with cereal and milk on top so the person has trouble eating their breakfast. People take this time to get creative in what stunt to pull off. “I went up to a friend and asked if they wanted a kiss, but I gave chocolate instead,” said freshman Amelia Deen.
During this time of year, companies and brands also like to take advantage of this day by messing with people. For example, some are Auntie Anne’s, Skittles, SOL De Janeiro, UGG, Evry Jewels, and Oreo. Auntie Anne’s decided to have fun by saying they now serve fresh pretzels on a plane and putting the smell of warm pretzels in the air vents. Next, Skittles said that they are coming out with deodorant. SOL De Janeiro took this year’s joke by responding to their hate comments from their newest scent by saying they are coming out with “Aranha Spider Salve”. Adding on, UGG took one of their most famous types of shoes, the Tasman shoe and said they would make it into a bed called “The Tasman Bed”. Evry Jewels decided to trick the world into thinking that they were closing, which had fans responding with fear but also laughing because they knew what day it was. “It really shocked me when I saw this,” said Lyla Cullimore. Lastly, Oreo hilariously said they are forever separating the creme and cookie part of the Oreo, making the cookies only called “just the wafer” and “just the creme”. Cheyenne Gomer, a freshman, said, “The Oreo April Fools prank made me laugh to see what they did.” The brands had fun posting their April Fools pranks and in return, so did the fans.
April Fools is a day where everyone takes part in having fun with pranks and tricks. All thanks to what happened back in 1582, there is a fun tradition that takes place every year.
