Is Senioritis a Major Problem in Schools?
Senioritis is a high school epidemic, with symptoms including loss of motivation and declining grades. But has it been infecting more than just seniors? As seniors see the finish line and they no longer have to worry about getting into college, and it seems the loss of motivation is more prominent towards the end of the year.
Some students at our school seem to think that senioritis is a severe problem and can affect everyone, not just seniors.
“It’s not unique to just seniors and lots of people are failing many of their classes,” says senior Elliott Flores.
Even if there are resources, they don’t necessarily help because a majority of students need the aid. Many students are also afraid to ask for help because they are afraid of other people judging them.
“It’s really bad and the loss of motivation hits everyone, and the school doesn’t give any resources to help.” says senior Allison Spier.
Others are saying it only affects seniors “It’s called senioritis for a reason many people can lose motivation, but this has a specific reason,” said senior George Temple.
Students have opinions on how the school is treating this and on how they don’t make the topic of senioritis a big enough deal. Many students and staff treat senioritis as a joke or something that isn’t serious. While other students think it should be a bigger topic that teachers need to talk about with every grade level.
This is a hundred percent true, the main factor of senioritis is the fact that most seniors have already been accepted into their colleges and don’t see the need to continue working and want to save their energy, so they aren’t burned out by the time college starts. Other factors are that seniors are almost done with school and want to just make it to graduation as fast as possible and don’t care about their grades as much anymore.
Whether you think senioritis just affects seniors or everyone there is no denying its existence and effect on students. Maybe one day there will be a cure, such as a week off for seniors; but for now, we wish everyone luck in their journey to the end of the year.
